Fish play an important role in scripture from the first leviathan in the primeval deep to the story of Jonah and the big fish, to Jesus cooking fish on the beach for the disciples, to calling the disciples, who were fisherfolk, away from their livelihood, to follow Jesus immediately. The ancient symbol of the fish was a coded symbol for early Christians. In Greek, the word ixthus, became an acronym for Jesus Christ Son of God Savior. Fisherfolk needed a boat, and the boat came to symbolize the church.

Mt. Tabor Epistle for the week of February 1-7, 2010
The Prayer of the Day for the fifth Sunday of Epiphany
Loving God, you have called forth disciples and prophets to live and speak your word. Give us ears to hear, lives to respond, and voices to proclaim the good news of salvation, which we know in our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
A Scripture from the coming Sunday
"Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." Luke 5:4
A Quote
"The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope." Anon

Some of what is happening this week at Mt. Tabor in addition to the many outside groups which use our building Tuesday: Choir at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday: Bible Study at 7:00 p.m. Saturday: Utah Food Bank 10:00 a.m.
We continue to hold the Kettners in our prayers, and also the people of Haiti. + Mt. Tabor did what few other congregations have this year by tithing our 2009 surplus to the ELCA. Thank you. This gift impacts many people and is a source of hope.
Looking Ahead + Lutherans at the Legislature on February 11th Join us at 9 a.m. to meet your representatives + Mt. Tabor's signature day, The Transfiguration, is February 14th. I invite you to look at the texts for that day and help me craft the sermon, by looking through the Gospel, Luke 9:28-43, for the 14th into your daily lives and telling me what you see. Simply email me insights you have. Again, my question to us all, (but to you!) is what might God transfigure here? You'll find the Gospel printed in the February newsletter.
Ash Wednesday Service + February 17 At 7:00 p.m.
From Pastor Jeff I am taking a few vacation days this week, to participate in a Light and Fast backpacking seminar with the Nat'l Outdoor Leadership School in Tucson. Pastor Steve Leiser will be on call. I return on Friday.
